Update (November 2020)
At this time, social worker Shauna Van Niekerk is accepting new clients, and we are also able to take referrals for psychoeducational assessments for children. Unfortunately, due to high demand for services in our community, our other clinicians are not able to accept new clients at this time. We are doing our best to serve our community in a timely manner, and will update the website when this situation changes. Please use the form below or phone 902-832-5190 to make a referral to see Shauna or to book a psychoeducational assessment for your child.
Covid-19 Update June 17, 2020
We are in the process of beginning to offer safe, limited in-person services, in accordance with the practice guidelines recently released by the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology. These guidelines suggest that in most cases we should continue to offer telehealth services, but allow for some limited face-to-face sessions based on the needs of individual clients. The guidelines do state that initial appointments should be held virtually, and that the potential need for face-to-face care can be discussed and determined at that initial virtual meeting. In keeping with these guidelines, initial appointments will continue to be held virtually at this time. If you are a current client and have any questions about this process, please discuss your concerns with your clinician. If you are a new client, wanting to self-refer to our practice, please complete the form below, or call 902-832-5190.
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind"
We are two psychologists who started off in the public health system, then spent the past 9 and 10 years working alongside some of the finest clinicians in Halifax, at a thriving downtown practice. In November 2018 we opened our own practice in the heart of beautiful Bedford, NS. Our vision is to bring top-notch psychological services to our clients and to provide a relaxing oasis in the bustle of your life. Between ourselves and our associates, we offer a range of psychological services for children, adolescents, adults, and couples.
DR. TRACY BANKS
I have over 18 years experience working with adults, children, adolescents, and families in both the public and private sectors, although my practice is now limited to adults. I provide individualized therapy that draws from Cognitive-Behavioural, Interpersonal, Acceptance and Commitment, Dialectical Behavioural, Internal Family Systems, and Attachment models, and I am trained in the Gottman method of couples therapy. I have experience and expertise working with depression, anxiety, work and school stress, caregiver stress, parenting, couples therapy, self-esteem, sleep difficulties, grief and bereavement, and coping with transitions. I have a particular interest in parents who care for children and adolescents with severe mental health problems.
Since graduating with my Masters Degree in 2001, I have worked in public mental health and in private practice. My area of practice is with adults. I specialize in the assessment and treatment of trauma-based disorders, such as Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and dissociative disorders. I work with people with a range of problems and backgrounds, including but not limited to: first responders, childhood abuse, sexual/physical assault, military trauma, and motor vehicle accidents.
My style of therapy is client-centred and collaborative. My treatment approach is integrative. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Each are effective treatments for trauma-based problems. I am trained in the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality (TSDP) and apply that when treating dissociative disorder. I also recognize the significance of early attachment in the treatment of many problems, including complex trauma and dissociative disorders.
I am a service provider for Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) and the RCMP. I provide diagnostic assessments and assess functional impairment regarding operational stress and injury.
I also treat depression, anxiety, grief/loss, self-esteem problems, and work-related problems. I work with individuals who are on leave from the workplace to help improve overall functioning and assist in the return-to-work process.
I provide assessment services to children and youth in the areas of Psycho-Educational assessment and assessment of ADHD. These assessments are beneficial to gain information about your child’s learning and behavior profiles, to clarify barriers that are impacting success or preventing your child from reaching their full potential, and to support school based programming. My suggestions and recommendations to support your child are guided by my knowledge of the education system in combination with best practices and evidence-based interventions.
In addition to working with Sunnyside Psychological Services, I provide services to schools within a local Regional Centre for Education where I have worked for 15 years as a school psychologist. In this position I work collaboratively with schools, students and parents to support student success.
